A former Horana United National Party (UNP) Urban Councillor has been remanded after being arrested over an alleged financial fraud involving six textile businessmen in Pettah.

Police arrested the suspect over allegations that she had obtained money from the businessmen by issuing dishonored cheques, resulting in an alleged loss of nearly Rs. 160 million.

Police said the suspect had been avoiding the traders for a period of time. However, after receiving information that she was at Sirikotha yesterday (18), the businessmen had arrived at the location, leading to a tense situation.

The Mirihana Police subsequently intervened and arrested the individuals involved. During the investigation, complaints were recorded from the businessmen against the suspect.

The suspect was later handed over to the Wattala Police and produced before Acting Wattala Magistrate M. Botheju today (19).

Court then ordered that she be remanded until July 21.
