Former Inspector General of Police C.D. Wickramaratne was laid to rest today amid police honours and ceremonial gun salutes.

The final farewell ceremony was held with the participation of senior police officers, family members, and dignitaries, as Sri Lanka Police paid tribute to the former police chief through official ceremonial traditions.

The solemn proceedings marked the end of the journey of a senior law enforcement officer who served as the head of the Sri Lanka Police.
Former IGP C.D. Wickramaratne passed away on July 17 at his residence after sustaining a gunshot injury.

Police expressed suspicion that the death was a suicide, with investigations indicating that he may have used the firearm belonging to his personal security officer. An open verdict was delivered following the post-mortem examination conducted on his remains.

C.D. Wickramaratne, who served as the 35th Inspector General of Police in Sri Lanka, was 63 years old at the time of his death.

He joined the Sri Lanka Police in 1986 and was appointed Acting Inspector General of Police following the suspension of then IGP Pujith Jayasundara after the Easter Sunday terrorist attacks in 2019.

He was later appointed as the Inspector General of Police on November 27, 2020.

Although he was scheduled to retire on March 25, 2023, he continued to serve as IGP for nearly eight more months after receiving several service extensions from then-President Ranil Wickremesinghe until the appointment of a new police chief.

C.D. Wickramaratne officially retired from the position of Inspector General of Police on November 23, 2023, bringing an end to a long career spanning nearly four decades in the Sri Lanka Police.
