More details have been revealed regarding yesterday’s shooting incident in Dematagoda during which one person was injured and later hospitalized.
Police suspect that the shooting incident, which took place in the Kuppiyawatta area of Dematagoda at around 6.35 p.m. yesterday (23), was orchestrated by associates of an underworld figure known as "Wanathe Chathu."
According to police, the intended target of the attack was an individual by the name of ‘Dinodh Varuna Bandara,’ a resident of Wanathamulla, Borella.
Police said ‘Dinodh Varuna Bandara’ is the individual who allegedly supplied the firearm used by the gunman in a shooting incident that occurred in Borella in July last year.
He had been remanded in custody over that incident and was later released on bail. Police further stated that he is a close associate of the alleged underworld figure known as "Wanathe Duminda," who is currently in police custody.
He had sustained gunshot injuries to the chest and is currently receiving treatment at the National Hospital of Colombo.
CCTV footage of the incident had captured two suspects arriving on a motorcycle before carrying out the shooting.
The footage also shows the gunmen allegedly chasing the injured victim and continuing to fire at him as he attempted to flee, before escaping from the scene on the same motorcycle.
Meanwhile, the Police Media Division stated that 21 shooting incidents have been reported across the country so far this year, resulting in 14 deaths and injuries to 12 persons.
