
Minister of Justice and National Integration Harshana Nanayakkara informed Parliament today (06) that the report of the committee appointed to investigate the violent unrest at the Negombo Prison has been presented to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
The Minister said that the clash, which occurred on July 5, resulted in the deaths of 22 inmates and 10 prison officers, while 106 inmates and 21 officers sustained injuries.
He further stated that compensation has already been paid to the families of prison officers who died in the incident, and that a presidential committee has been appointed to consider possible measures beyond the Public Administration Circular.
Accordingly, decisions are to be taken on compensation, pension payments and loans obtained by the deceased officers.
Minister Nanayakkara added that the committee will also assess the condition and level of disability of injured officers and recommend appropriate measures.
