The Sri Lanka Police have received complaints through the Interchange Unit of the Expressway Division that fraudulent messages resembling official notifications issued by the Sri Lanka Police regarding speed limit violations and other traffic-related offences are currently being circulated via social media and other digital platforms.

Issuing a statement in view of this situation, the Sri Lanka Police has urge the public to follow the guidelines below to avoid becoming victims of deceptive messages and cyber threats such as phishing and online scams.

Do not click on suspicious links received via SMS, email, messaging applications, or forwarded messages containing unknown internet links.

Before opening or responding to any link, carefully verify the authenticity of the website address and the identity of the sender.

Never disclose personal information, bank account details, One-Time Passwords (OTPs), PINs, or passwords through unverified links or unfamiliar websites.

Verify the accuracy of such information only through official Sri Lanka Police media channels and authorized government websites.

Report suspicious messages, fraudulent websites, and misleading social media posts to the relevant authorities without delay.

Keep your mobile devices, operating systems, and software applications updated regularly to reduce cybersecurity risks.

Exercise extreme caution when receiving messages that create a sense of urgency, threaten legal action, or demand immediate payment.

Adhering to these precautions will significantly reduce the risk of becoming a victim of cybercrime and help safeguard personal information and financial security, the police said.

The Sri Lanka Police also mentioned that previously a public advisory on this matter has been issued.
