An individual has been arrested by the Cinnamon Gardens Police for allegedly filming the official residences and surrounding roads of the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the Chief Justice in Colombo.

The mobile phone allegedly used by the suspect to film the videos has also been taken into police custody, police said. 

Police said the suspect was arrested last night (06) after an officer attached to the Special Task Force (STF) on duty at the main entrance of the IGP's official residence noticed a person arriving in a luxury vehicle and recording videos from the roadside of the residence.

The STF officer alerted a nearby traffic police constable in the area, who informed the Colombo Emergency Call Unit. A team from the Cinnamon Gardens Police Station later had arrived at the location and arrested the suspect following investigations.

The Police said the mobile phone used by the suspect was also taken into custody, and an examination of the device had revealed footage of the IGP’s official residence, the surrounding road, the Chief Justice’s official residence, and its vicinity. 

During questioning, the suspect had claimed that he recorded the videos as a hobby. 

However, a senior police officer said that the suspect gave contradictory information regarding his residence and other details during further questioning.

The arrested suspect has been identified as a 40-year-old resident of Aruggoda area in Alubomulla, according to police. 

Cinnamon Gardens Police are conducting further investigations into the incident.
