Grama Niladhari Officers have decided not to report for duty islandwide tomorrow (10) and the following day (11), by reporting sick leave, citing the failure of authorities to increase their travel allowance and several other demands.
The Chairman of the Grama Niladhari Trade Union Alliance, Nandana Ranasinghe, made the announcement while speaking at a media briefing held in Colombo.
The Rs. 600 travel allowance provided to Grama Niladharis has not been increased for the past eight years, he stressed.
In 2024, Cabinet approval was granted to provide an allowance equivalent to the cost of 20 litres of fuel in place of the existing travel allowance.
However, Ranasinghe said that a trade union action would be launched tomorrow (10) and the following day (11), with Grama Niladharis reporting sick leave and refraining from reporting for duty, in protest against the failure to implement the approved allowance.
Accordingly, the trade union action will be carried out island wide.
