Two traders in Wellawaya have been fined a total of Rs. 300,000 by the Wellawaya Magistrate’s Court for selling rice above the stipulated maximum retail prices, according to the Consumer Affairs Authority.
Legal action was taken against a trader for selling a five-kilogram pack of locally produced Keeri Samba rice at Rs. 350 per kilogram, despite the controlled price being set at Rs. 260 per kilogram.
After the accused pleaded guilty to the charge, the court imposed a fine of Rs. 150,000.
In a separate case, legal action was taken against a trader in Wellawaya, for selling imported Ponni Samba GR 11 rice at Rs. 260 per kilogram, exceeding the stipulated maximum retail price of Rs. 240 per kilogram.
The accused also pleaded guilty to the offence and was fined Rs. 150,000 by the Wellawaya Magistrate’s Court, the Consumer Affairs Authority said.
