Former Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) Nawalapitiya organiser K.L.A. Gunasinghe and several local constituency representatives have joined the Sarvajana Balaya alliance.

The group held a special meeting today (09) with Sarvajana Balaya National Organiser former Member of Parliament Dilum Amunugama at a private venue in Nawalapitiya.

Following the meeting, Gunasinghe said that he and the other representatives had officially decided to join Sarvajana Balaya and work with the party.

Speaking to media after the group’s decision, Amunugama said that if the government is claiming that the opposition is directly involved in clashes occurring inside prisons, then there would be no need for a government.

He also described the issuance of the gazette notification seeking to extend the term of judges, despite opposition from the Chief Prelates, as a clear indication of what he called the current government’s authoritarian tendencies.

Meanwhile, former MP Amunugama further claimed that while other political parties had declined from previously high levels of voter support, the Sarvajana Balaya had built a strong voter base after starting from virtually zero.

He said the movement has continued to expand its support despite the declining voter bases of established political parties.
