The spill gates of the Kotmale Gamini Dissanayake Reservoir were opened slightly at 7.00 p.m. today (9) after the reservoir’s water level reached near its maximum capacity.
The Major Dams and Reservoir Operations Division of the Sri Lanka Mahaweli Authority in Kotmale said around 20 cubic metres of excess water per second is being released into the Kotmala Oya through the spill gates.
Authorities said water levels in the Kotmala Oya and the Mahaweli River downstream of the reservoir could rise slightly due to the release.
Residents living in areas downstream of the reservoir have been urged to remain vigilant and closely monitor the situation.
Authorities have also requested that residents in the affected areas be informed immediately and advised to follow any safety instructions issued by officials.
