A technical officer attached to the Alayadiveambu Pradeshiya Sabha has been arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) on charges of soliciting and accepting a bribe of Rs. 40,000.

The suspect had allegedly demanded the bribe to provide the necessary recommendations for the release of retention funds upon the completion of two construction projects: the drainage system of a public playground belonging to the Alayadiveambu Pradeshiya Sabha and a shop premises in Akkaraipattu town under the Department of Rural Industries in the Ampara District.

Accordingly, the suspect had allegedly solicited and accepted Rs. 40,000 as a bribe, calculated at Rs. 20,000 for each of the two contracts, from the individual concerned.

In addition, the suspect had requested a loan of Rs. 100,000 from the same individual and obtained a cheque for Rs. 100,000 in connection with the request.

However, investigating officers arrested the suspect during a raid conducted at around 1:55 p.m. yesterday (10) at the individual’s business premises.

The suspect is scheduled to be produced before the Akkaraipattu Magistrate’s Court.
