Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Parliamentarian Sujeewa Senasinghe today (12) made public a letter sent to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake by the Chief Prelates of the three Buddhist chapters regarding the proposed 22nd Amendment to the Constitution.
Speaking at a media briefing, MP Senasinghe said the letter contains the views of the Chief Prelates on the proposed constitutional amendment and that they have urged the President not to proceed with it.
According to the letter, the current constitutional provisions set the retirement age of judges of the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court at 63 and 65, respectively.
The Chief Prelates have stated that they believe it would not be appropriate for the government to take steps to increase these retirement age limits, according to the Parliamentarian.
MP Senasinghe also said the letter had been difficult to obtain but was eventually brought to his attention.
