Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya has stressed that overcoming Sri Lanka’s economic crisis alone cannot be the country’s ultimate goal, saying a broader economic and institutional transformation is essential for sustainable progress.

The Prime Minister made the remarks while addressing the inauguration of the 39th Annual Convention of the Organisation of Professional Associations of Sri Lanka (OPA), held under the theme “Envisioning Sri Lanka: Beyond Recovery.”

Prime Minister Amarasuriya said the economic, social and institutional challenges faced by Sri Lanka in recent years had weakened public confidence and created uncertainty over the country’s future.

She said economic recovery should only serve as the foundation for a deeper transformation, rather than a return to the conditions that existed before the crisis.

According to the Prime Minister, Sri Lanka’s objective should be to build a country with strong institutions, a resilient economy, quality public services and greater opportunities for all citizens.

She also stressed that sustainable development cannot be achieved through economic growth and physical development alone, highlighting the importance of transparent governance and making effective use of the country’s professional expertise.
Government seeks greater professional input

The Prime Minister said professional organisations such as the OPA have an important role to play in the country’s transformation.

She noted that professionals contribute to progress across every sector and said a country’s development depends not only on its physical resources but also on how effectively the knowledge, skills and experience of its people are utilised.

Prime Minister Amarasuriya said the present government considers evidence-based knowledge, data and practical experience from professionals essential when formulating policies.

She stressed that policies should not remain confined to documents but must ultimately have a positive impact on people’s daily lives.

The Prime Minister also pointed to rapid global changes driven by artificial intelligence, digital technology and climate change, saying Sri Lanka must be prepared to respond to these developments.

She further emphasised that professionals must uphold social responsibility and ethical leadership, particularly at a time when misinformation can spread rapidly.

Professionals, she said, have a responsibility to express their views based on evidence and scientific knowledge while protecting democratic values.

During the convention, the OPA Journal was presented to the Prime Minister, while the official logo of the 39th Annual Convention was also unveiled.

The event was attended by British High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Andrew Patrick, Advocata Institute Chairman Murtaza Jafferjee, OPA President Jayanthi Gallehewa, incoming President and Convention Committee Chairman Thisara de Silva, General Secretary Engineer Ravi Rupasinghe and members of the Organisation of Professional Associations of Sri Lanka.
