
The National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) states that there has been an increase in complaints relating to child neglect and abandonment, as well as physical and psychological abuse.
The Attorney-at-Law and Director of Law Enforcement at the NCPA, Sajeewani Abeykoon stated that the authority receives between 600 and 1,000 complaints each month.
Attorney-at-Law Sajeewani Abeykoon further noted that, under the Penal Code, parents found guilty of such offences may be sentenced to imprisonment for a term ranging from a minimum of two years to a maximum of ten years.
