
Four police officers arrested over an alleged Rs. 500,000 bribe taken from the owner of a cannabis plantation in Nikawewa, within the Thanamalwila Police Division, have been released on bail by the Wellawaya Magistrate’s Court.
Court ordered each suspect to be released on a cash bail of Rs. 50,000 and two surety bails of Rs. 200,000 each.
The officers were arrested following a raid conducted recently by officers attached to the Monaragala Divisional Anti-Corruption Unit at a cannabis plantation in the Nikawewa area.
According to police, an investigation into the incident revealed allegations that the officers had obtained Rs. 500,000 from the owner of the plantation during the raid.
The suspects include two police sergeants, a police constable and a police constable driver, all attached to the Monaragala Divisional Anti-Corruption Unit.
Further investigations into the alleged bribery incident are being conducted by the Thanamalwila Headquarters Police.
