
The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) has filed a petition before the Supreme Court challenging the constitutionality of the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution, which was presented to Parliament today by the government.
The petition was filed under case number SC/SD/31/2026.
According to the SJB, the party carefully reviewed the provisions of the proposed 22nd Amendment and decided to seek the Supreme Court’s determination regarding its constitutionality and the legal issues arising from its contents.
The SJB emphasized that any amendment to the Constitution must be subjected to thorough scrutiny, particularly with regard to its potential impact on the country’s democratic framework, the separation of powers, and the fundamental rights of the people.
