A fisherman has gone missing after a fishing boat met with an accident in the Chilaw estuary early this morning (20), despite warnings issued over rough sea conditions.
The missing fisherman has been identified as a 67-year-old resident of Chilaw.
The accident occurred at around 6.00 a.m., while two fishermen were aboard the boat, identified as “Rashmika Putha.”
One of the fishermen was rescued following the incident and later lodged a complaint with the Chilaw Police.
The two fishermen had reportedly set out to sea at around 1.00 p.m. yesterday (19) from the Chilaw area.
Several fishing boats have now joined a search operation to locate the missing fisherman.
The incident occurred despite repeated advisories from the Department of Meteorology warning of rough sea conditions.
Authorities have urged fishermen to exercise extreme caution and avoid venturing into the sea when adverse weather warnings are in effect.
