An Inspector of Police and a Police Constable attached to the Sainthamaruthu Police Station, who were arrested on charges of soliciting and accepting a bribe of Rs. 20,000, have been remanded until August 28.
Officers of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) arrested the two police officers for allegedly soliciting and accepting a bribe in exchange for taking lenient legal action against a suspect arrested for possession of “ice” (crystal methamphetamine).
The officers are accused of soliciting the bribe in exchange for refraining from taking legal action regarding the total quantity of “ice” allegedly found in the suspect’s possession, reporting only 70 milligrams of heroin to the court to secure a lesser penalty, and allowing the suspect to continue operating without interference in the future.
The Inspector of Police was arrested on August 17, 2026, inside the Periyanilavanai Police Station, while the Police Constable was arrested in front of Zahira College, Kudi 9, in Kalmunai, by officers of the Bribery Commission.
The suspects were subsequently produced before the Kalmunai Magistrate’s Court and remanded until August 28.
