The Sri Lanka Navy, in coordination with police, seized over 2,276 kilograms of smuggled Kendu leaves during a search operation conducted in Negombo earlier today (23).

The operation also resulted in the seizure of two dinghies and a lorry allegedly used in connection with the smuggling operation.

The search operation was carried out in the Wellaweediya coastal area by naval personnel attached to SLNS Kelani under the Western Naval Command, together with officers from the Negombo Thelwatta Police.

During the operation, the personnel inspected two suspicious dinghies and a lorry found in the area.

According to the Navy, the search team subsequently discovered a large consignment of Kendu leaves suspected to have been smuggled into the country using the dinghies.

The consignment was reportedly being prepared for transportation using the lorry when the authorities intervened.

The seized 2,276 kg of Kendu leaves, two dinghies and the lorry were handed over to the Negombo Thelwatta Police for further legal action.

Police are expected to conduct further investigations into the suspected smuggling operation and those involved.
