
A special security and traffic management plan will be implemented tomorrow (24) for the second Randoli Perahera of the historic Kandy Esala Perahera, which is scheduled to parade the streets from the Sri Dalada Maligawa, police said.
The historic Kandy Esala Perahera began on August 18 and will continue until August 28.
Police said special measures have been introduced throughout the Perahera period to ensure public safety and manage traffic congestion. These include roadblocks, security duties, vehicle and personal inspections, tourist assistance and a special vehicle parking arrangement, police noted.
Second Randoli Perahera to Begin at 7 p.m.
The second Randoli Perahera will begin from the Sri Dalada Maligawa at 7.00 p.m. tomorrow (24).
Motorists have been advised to use alternative routes during the Perahera due to temporary traffic restrictions.
Alternative Routes for Heavy Vehicles
Heavy vehicles travelling from Katugastota towards Kandy can proceed from the Mahaiyawa Junction via Thilak Ratnayake Mawatha and the Police Junction towards Kandy.
Light vehicles travelling from the Katugastota side can use the D.S. Senanayake Veediya, proceed along Cross Street to Yatinuwara Veediya, turn right and then turn left near Meera Maccam Mosque before continuing along Thilak Ratnayake Mawatha.
Vehicles leaving Kandy towards Katugastota can travel from Police Junction along Thilak Ratnayake Mawatha towards Mahaiyawa.
Routes from Tennekumbura and Ampitiya
Vehicles arriving from Tennekumbura and Ampitiya can travel along the Sangaraja Mawatha to Wales Park Junction, turn right onto Ehelepola Kumarihami Mawatha and proceed towards Bogambara and the railway station area.
Vehicles travelling towards Colombo can use the left side, while those heading towards Kandy city can use the right side.
Motorists can also enter Kandy city from the Rajapihilla Mawatha Junction via Mosque Road.
Vehicles travelling from Kandy towards Ampitiya and Teldeniya can proceed from the Clock Tower roundabout along Dalada Street, pass the side entrance of the Queen's Hotel and continue past the Joy Boat service before joining Sangaraja Mawatha.
An alternative route is available via Ehelepola Kumarihami Mawatha, Rajapihilla Mawatha and Wales Park Junction before joining Sangaraja Mawatha towards Ampitiya and Tennekumbura.
Routes Between Colombo and Kandy
Vehicles travelling between Colombo and Kandy can use William Gopallawa Mawatha and the Old Peradeniya Road in both directions.
Police have urged motorists and the public to follow traffic instructions and cooperate with officers deployed in the area during the Perahera.
