PUCSL warns of possible power shortages amid El Niño conditions

Sri Lanka could face increased electricity demand and reduced power generation in the future due to prevailing El Niño conditions, potentially leading to power cuts, a senior official of the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) said today.

 

K. P. L. Chandralal, the Chairman of the PUCSL said electricity demand could rise under the prevailing weather conditions, while power generation could decline if water sources used for hydroelectricity generation begin to dry up.

 

He warned that the combination of higher demand and reduced generation capacity could create pressure on the national electricity supply.

 

The Chairman made the remarks while addressing a media briefing held today (24) on the announcement of electricity purchase prices for renewable energy-based power plants.
