Specialist Paediatrician Dr. Deepal Perera of the Lady Ridgeway Hospital has urged parents to pay close attention to the health and safety of their children amid the prevailing hot weather conditions and the ongoing school holidays.

He noted that the prevailing high temperatures have increased the risk of dehydration among children, particularly those who engage in outdoor activities.

The paediatrician warned that prolonged exposure to direct sunlight and excessive physical activity in hot conditions can place significant stress on the body and, in severe cases, may lead to heat-related shock and adversely affect vital organs, including the heart and brain.

He explained that the initial symptoms of dehydration may include headaches, vomiting, body aches, drowsiness, discomfort, loss of appetite, and dark-coloured urine. Therefore, he stressed the importance of ensuring that children who engage in outdoor activities consume adequate amounts of water.

In addition to water, he recommended providing children with natural fluids and nutritious refreshments such as king coconut water, ‘Jeewani’, lime and other fruit juices, porridge, and soups to help maintain adequate hydration.

The paediatrician further advised parents to take appropriate precautions during periods of intense sunlight. These include dressing children in lightweight cotton clothing, ensuring they wear hats when outdoors, and encouraging them to rest in cool, shaded areas, such as under trees.

Meanwhile, Dr. Deepal Perera emphasized that parents should remain particularly vigilant during the school vacation, as children may spend more time at home and engage in outdoor activities without adequate supervision.
