The government will continue using the QR code system for fuel distribution as the conflict in the Middle East has not yet ended, Cabinet Spokesman Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said today (25).
Speaking at the weekly Cabinet media briefing held at the Department of Government Information, Minister Jayatissa said the ongoing situation in the Middle East and uncertainty surrounding the Strait of Hormuz continued to affect global fuel prices and supply.
He said the QR system would therefore remain in place to ensure fuel supplies are managed without disrupting the daily lives of the public.
However, Minister Jayatissa noted that fuel consumption had declined only moderately despite the implementation of the QR system and increases in fuel prices.
According to the Minister, diesel consumption has declined by around 10% and petrol consumption by around 9%.
He added that fuel would continue to be supplied to essential sectors and that the QR system would likely remain in operation for some time until the global fuel situation improves.
