
A severed human head has been found near a riverbank behind a carpentry workshop in Moratumulla this morning (30), police said.
Moratumulla Police OIC Dinesh Hettiarachchi confirmed that the head was discovered near the riverbank behind the workshop.
The owner of the carpentry workshop had reportedly spotted the remains at around 8.00 a.m. and alerted police via the 119 emergency hotline.
Police teams from the Moratumulla Police, the Police Special Task Force (STF) and Mount Lavinia arrived at the location and conducted investigations.
The Acting Moratuwa Magistrate also visited the scene and conducted an inspection.
Police said the head was in an advanced state of decomposition and appeared to have been partially eaten by animals.
The identity of the deceased and the circumstances surrounding the discovery have not yet been established.
Moratumulla Police are conducting further investigations.
