Police have raided a large-scale illegal liquor distillery operating in the Madarawatta area of Pahala Diyadora within the Kuliyapitiya Police Division and arrested a suspect.

The raid was carried out today (31) by a special team from the Walana Central Anti Vice Striking Force, following a covert investigation launched based on information received by the unit’s Officer-in-Charge.

The operation was conducted on the instructions of Assistant Superintendent of Police Rohan Olugala, Director of the Walana Central Anti Vice Striking Force.

During the raid, police seized 40 barrels containing approximately 7,560 litres of “goda,” a fermented liquid used in the production of illicit liquor, along with 250 bottles containing 187 litres of illicit liquor.

Police also seized two copper coils, each consisting of seven loops, two gas stoves and four 12.5-kilogramme gas cylinders used in the illegal production process.

The arrested suspect was handed over to the Kuliyapitiya Police for further legal action.

Further investigations have revealed that the operators had allegedly planned to distill the seized “goda” and distribute the illegally produced liquor throughout the surrounding area, police said.
