Legal reforms to allow certain individuals to serve their sentences under house arrest instead of imprisonment are currently being pursued, according to Cabinet Spokesperson Minister Nalinda Jayatissa.
Minister Jayatissa made these remarks during the weekly Cabinet media briefing held at the Department of Government Information today (01).
He stated that several legal reforms in this regard are already under discussion and that the necessary legislative provisions are currently being drafted.
“Alongside a number of ongoing reforms in the judicial system, this legal reform is also being pursued. Discussions are underway and legislation is being drafted on several measures, including reducing overcrowding in prisons, expediting reports from the Government Analyst’s Department, introducing necessary legal reforms to grant bail to individuals who are unable to secure bail, and allowing certain individuals to serve their sentences outside prison under house arrest.”
“The proposal to increase the retirement age of judges is also being considered within this broader framework of judicial reforms,” Minister Nalinda Jayatissa added.
