The Supreme Court has three weeks from today to determine whether the proposed 22nd Amendment to the Constitution requires a referendum, Cabinet Spokesperson Minister Nalinda Jayatissa said today (01).
Speaking during the weekly Cabinet media briefing held at the Department of Government Information today (01), Minister Jayatissa said the Supreme Court will consider all petitions filed against the proposed amendment before communicating its determination to Parliament.
The Supreme Court will decide whether the amendment can be passed with a two-thirds majority in Parliament or whether a referendum would also be required.
The Minister stressed that a referendum cannot be held on the proposed amendment without a determination by the Supreme Court, regardless of whether such a request is made by the government or the opposition.
