Two youths have drowned while bathing in the Nanu Oya canal, which flows from Nuwara Eliya towards the Kotmale Reservoir, said Ada Derana reporter.

The deceased have been identified as Perumal Thivakaran, 23, of Edinburgh Estate in Nanu Oya, and Amalagan Dickson, 24, of Haputale.

According to the Officer-in-Charge of the Nanu Oya Police Station, the two youths were bathing in the canal at the Radella Glasgow Estate area along with several relatives.

Amalagan, who had travelled from Haputale to visit relatives at Edinburgh Estate in Nanu Oya, reportedly drowned and disappeared while bathing in the canal. Perumal then entered the water in an attempt to rescue him but also drowned.

Nanu Oya police officers, together with local residents, subsequently recovered the bodies of both youths from a deep section of the canal.

A police officer investigating the incident said the bodies have been taken to the Nuwara Eliya District Hospital, where post-mortem examinations are scheduled to be conducted by the District Medical Officer.

Police are continuing investigations into the incident.
