Police suspect that the hand grenade attack carried out by an unidentified individual early last morning (11) on a residence located on Sirisangabo Mawatha in Dehiwala, was likely a case of mistaken identity.

Two children from the same family were killed in the attack, while their father sustained critical injuries and is currently receiving treatment at the Kalubowila Teaching Hospital.

Police suspect that the incident occurred because the attacker had intended to target the residence of the injured man’s brother but inadvertently targeted the wrong house instead.

The remains of the two deceased children are scheduled to be brought to their residence this afternoon (12).

Meanwhile, speaking to the media following an event held in the Katubedda area of Moratuwa today, Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police (SDIG) in charge of the Western Province, Sajeewa Medawatte, stated that organized crime gangs would not be allowed to bypass the police or the public under any circumstances.

The Senior DIG further noted that underworld gangs had begun employing hand grenade attacks as a new tactic in carrying out organized criminal activities.
