Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa says a massive public mobilization and peaceful protest against the proposed 22nd Amendment to the Constitution will be held in Colombo on September 24.
Premadasa made the announcement while addressing a meeting of Samagi Jana Balawegaya local government representatives and electoral organizers from the Colombo District at the Opposition Leader’s Office today (13).
He accused the present government, led by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake of attempting to establish one-party rule through the proposed 22nd Amendment by undermining the independence of the judiciary and the rule of law.
Premadasa said that even though the government commands a two-thirds majority in Parliament, it would not be allowed to undermine the democratic rights of the people. He also claimed that the Samagi Jana Balawegaya was the first political force to oppose the proposed amendment.
He called on all progressive forces and the public to support efforts to defeat what he described as the government’s agenda.
The Opposition Leader further said that the strongest political response to the government’s programme would be launched on September 24, when the planned mass mobilization and peaceful protest take place in Colombo.
