The Department of Meteorology has issued an Amber-level warm weather advisory for several parts of the country, warning of increased heat stress during the daytime tomorrow (14).

The advisory was issued by the Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre at 4.00 p.m. today (13) and will be in place at 4.00 p.m. tomorrow.

The warning has been issued to residents of the North Central and Eastern provinces and the Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Mullaitivu, Vavuniya, Monaragala and Hambantota.

According to the Met. Department, the heat index — the temperature felt by the human body — is expected to reach the “Caution” level in some areas during the daytime.

The Department has also urged the general public to take precautions to reduce the effects of the heat.

People working at outdoor job sites have been advised to stay hydrated and take frequent breaks in shaded areas.

The public has also been advised to check on elderly and sick individuals, while motorists have been warned never to leave children unattended inside vehicles.

Those engaging in outdoor activities have been encouraged to limit strenuous physical activity, seek shade and drink plenty of water.

The Met. Department also recommended wearing lightweight, white or light-coloured clothing to reduce the impact of the heat.
