
A discussion to review the progress of the Clean Sri Lanka ‘Clean Colombo’ programme has been held at the Presidential Secretariat this morning (09), under the chairmanship of Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumanayake, Secretary to the President.
Several initiatives are being implemented under the programme, including the rehabilitation and improvement of the sewerage network and drainage canals, environmental beautification, and the streamlining of waste management, the President’s Media Division (PMD) said in a statement.
During the meeting, extensive discussions were held on the projects and action plans being implemented by the relevant institutions.
The Colombo Municipal Council, Sri Lanka Land Development Corporation, Urban Development Authority, Road Development Authority, Department of Coast Conservation and Coastal Resource Management, and Sri Lanka Railways are the main institutions involved in the programme.
The progress of projects prepared by these institutions was also reviewed at the meeting, the statement said.
In addition, the meeting emphasized the need to integrate, under the Clean Colombo programme, initiatives being implemented across the island that are relevant to Colombo and fall under the Clean Sri Lanka programme.
These initiatives aim to promote social well-being, environmental sustainability and an ethical revival through changes in citizens’ behavior, the PMD stated .
Those present included the additional Secretary to the President (Clean Sri Lanka) S. P. C. Sugeeshwara and representatives of the Clean Sri Lanka Secretariat; Colombo Deputy Mayor Hemantha Weerakoon and representatives of the Colombo Municipal Council; senior officers of the three armed forces; and representatives of the Sri Lanka Land Development Corporation, Urban Development Authority, Road Development Authority, Department of Coast Conservation and Coastal Resource Management, and Sri Lanka Railways.
