
A total of four individuals, including two women, have been killed in separate road accidents reported in several parts of the island, the Police Media Division said.
The fatal accidents occurred in Bandaragama, Hikkaduwa, Horana and Embilipitiya, police said.
A 59-year-old woman was killed after being struck by a Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) bus travelling towards Bandaragama in the Galthude area.
The accident had occurred when the bus, having picked up passengers from a bus stop along the Bandaragama-Kalutara road, moved forward and collided with the woman as she was crossing the road.
Police said the woman, a resident of Bandaragama, succumbed to her injuries while receiving treatment at Panadura Hospital. The bus driver has been arrested in connection with the accident.
Meanwhile, a 52-year-old woman was killed in a motorcycle accident on the Galle–Colombo main road within the Hikkaduwa Police Division.
The accident had took place when a motorcycle travelling towards Hikkaduwa attempted to turn into a side road on the right and collided with another motorcycle.
Both riders and a female pillion passenger sustained injuries and were admitted to Karapitiya Hospital. The female pillion passenger later succumbed to her injuries while receiving treatment, police said.
In another incident, a 32-year-old tractor driver was killed after the vehicle overturned on the Ellakanda road within the Horana Police Division.
Police said the tractor, which was transporting rubber firewood towards Sorana Watta, had veered off the road and overturned down a slope after the driver lost control. The driver had sustained critical injuries and was pronounced dead on admission to Horana District General Hospital.
Meanwhile, a 17-year-old youth was killed when his motorcycle collided with a car and an ambulance near the third milepost on the Embilipitiya–Moraketiya road.
The motorcycle, travelling towards Moraketiya, first crashed into a car moving ahead in the same direction and subsequently collided with an ambulance coming from the opposite direction, police said.
The injured motorcyclist succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment at Embilipitiya Hospital.
The deceased has been identified as a resident of the Sevanagala area, police said.
