Sri Lanka Police has the highest number of officers who lose their lives while on duty compared to other services in the country, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Priyantha Weerasooriya said.
He noted that several special programmes are currently being implemented to establish a more efficient police service.
The IGP made these remarks while attending an event held in the Biyagama area.
“We need a group of disciplined, efficient and strong officers. When considering the number of police personnel, a significant number fall ill or are involved in road accidents on a daily basis. Even today, two police officers have been involved in road accidents.
“Nearly 200 police officers have lost their lives while on duty. If we consider any service in Sri Lanka, the Sri Lanka Police has the highest number of officers who die while on duty. There are many reasons for this, and steps are being taken to minimize these risks.
“Basic medical kits have already been provided to every police station. Arrangements are also being made to provide physical fitness equipment at police station level,” he said.
