Fmr. Embilipitiya ASP remanded until Feb, 17

Former ASP of Embilipitiya police division, D.W.C. Dharmaratne has been remanded until February 17, Ada Derana reporter said.

The ASP was arrested on February 02 in connection with the recent death of a man during a clash with police in Embilipitiya.

However, Embilipitiya Headquarters Inspector (HQI), S.R.J. Dias, who is in the spotlight with respect to the case, is still at large, it was reported.

Dharmaratne was remanded after he was produced before the Embilipitiya Magistrate this morning. The suspect will be detained at the Kuruwita Remand Prison.

The police came under heavy criticism last week from legal experts and lawyers for its failure to arrest the alleged suspects though the Embilipitiya court had already ruled the arrest of the involved individuals.

Police Spokesperson Ruan Gunasekara earlier told Ada Derana that the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has sought instructions from the Attorney General’s Department in a bid to take further steps in this case.

However, victim’s family’s attorney Vijitha G. Punchihewa pointed out that the CID does not want to seek instructions from the AG to arrest the individuals since a court order had already been issued.

“The police are empowered to arrest a person in a case of this nature even without a court order,” he said.
