Power outage possibly caused by lightning strike - CEB

Initial investigations have revealed that the power failure experienced island wide was due to a possible lightning strike on a transmission line from Polpitiya to Kolonnawa, the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) said. 

The sudden outage, which occurred at around 2.15pm today, had affected the entire country and the CEB had said that the precise reason is e to be ascertained. 

The power supply has now been restores to several areas while it is expected to be fully restored by 6.00pm. 

Meanwhile Minister of Power and Renewable Energy Ranjith Siyambalapitiya has instructed relevant authorities to conduct a special inquiry regarding the sudden power outage and submit a report at the earliest. 

A special meeting is also to be held at 7.00pm regarding the matter with the participation of the Minister, Deputy Minister of Power and Renewable Energy Ajith P Perera, Ministry Secretary Dr. Suren Batagoda, CEB chairman Anura Wijepala and General Manager M.C. Wickramasekara.
