Former Deputy Minister Premalal Jayasekara, who was arrested over an election-related shooting incident in Kahawatta, has been remanded until January 20 by the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court, police spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana said.

The former Deputy Minister of Power and Energy, who was arrested in Aluthgama last night, was produced at court by Slave Island Police today (10).

He was also ordered to be produced at the Pelmadulla Magistrate’s Court on January 20, police said.

On January 5, the Pelmadulla Magistrate issued an arrest warrant on Jayasekara and several local politicians over their alleged involvement in the shooting incident at a venue of an election rally of the Common Candidate in Kahawatta, Ratnapura.

A political supporter, who was engaged in decorating the election stage, was wounded in the shooting and succumbed to injuries in hospital on Thursday (8).
