President leaves on official visit to Cuba

President Mahinda Rajapaksa left the country on an official visit to Cuba this morning (June 16) and is due to land in Havana, President’s Spokesman Bandula Jayasekera stated.
The President is due to sign an agreement between the Lakshman Kadirgamar Institute and the Raul Roa Garcia institute in Cuba regarding a study of Sri Lanka’s international relations.
President Rajapaksa, heading a delegation that includes External Affairs Minister G. L. Peiris and other cabinet members, will hold official talks with the Cuban president Raul Castro; pay homage to the National Hero Jose Marti and visit places of interest in Havana city, among other activities.
Cuba and Sri Lanka started diplomatic relations in July 1959, and have cooperated with each other in sports, education, health and other sectors.
