The Supreme Court today issued an eviction notice to 577 families living in the Apple Watta area in Maligawatta, ordering their eviction before March 28.
A petition filed by a group of residents, against the demolishing of several houses at Apple Watta, was taken up by the Supreme Court today.
The court order also directed the Urban Development Authority to bear the cost of rent for those who live in rented houses until their permanent residencies are built.
The Urban Development Authority, during a previous hearing, had informed court that the unauthorized slums in Apple Watta were being demolished for the purpose of building new home instead.
