The Colombo Chief Magistrate has directed the Prisons Hospital doctor to take charge of Shashi Weerawansa, who is being treated at a private hospital in Malabe while under arrest.

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) apprehended Shashi Weerawansa at the private hospital on Sunday (22), on charges of submitting forged documents to obtain a diplomatic passport. She was subsequently remanded until 25 February.

Prison authorities today sought permission from the court to transfer the suspect from the private hospital to remand custody.

Attorneys representing Mrs. Weerawansa requested for consent to admit the defendant to the Colombo National Hospital as she is suffering from an illness.

However, the Magistrate stated that he is unable to issue such a directive.

Instructing Prisons Hospital doctor to take charge of Shashi Weerawansa, the Colombo Chief Magistrate also ordered the Director of the private hospital in Malabe to give reason if the suspect cannot be released from the hospital.
