VIDEO: Monks prepared to undergo imprisonment instead of SF

If Democratic National Alliance (DNA) leader former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka is released from prison, 100 Buddhist monks are prepared to serve rigorous imprisonment instead, said Ven. Maduluwawe Sobhitha Thera at a news briefing of the Jathika Bhikshu Peramuna (National Bhikku Front) a short while ago.

A hero who fought for the country and who made it possible for us to live in freedom today is suffering in jail while those like KP, Karuna and Pillayan who killed and maimed thousands are enjoying luxury, said the Ven. Thera.

“Sarath Fonseka is suffering from several ailments. Don’t increase his sufferings by imprisonment. We thought that President Mahinda Rajapaksa, on his return from New York, would not approve the Court Martial verdict. But the country was shocked to note that he did it. The President lost an opportunity to gain more popularity and the faith of the masses by signing this document,” said Ven. Sobhitha Thera.

On a pardon from the President, the Ven. Monk said that Mr. Fonseka will never ask for a pardon as he had not done any wrong. However, he said that the monks urge the President to reconsider the decision and offer a pardon to Mr. Fonseka.

Ven. Sobhitha also urged the public to visit temples, light lamps and invoke blessings on Sarath Fonseka and pray for the alleviation of his sufferings.
