LG Elections to be held soon after parliamentary polls

The Election Commission of Sri Lanka says that steps will be taken to hold the Local Government Elections, in compliance with the Supreme Court order, as soon as the upcoming General Election is concluded.

The announcement notes that the Election Commission has given due respect to the Supreme Court’s decision made on 22.08.2024, concerning the Fundamental Rights Applications related to the 2023 Local Government Elections.

Accordingly, the announcement further emphasizes that the Election Commission acknowledges its responsibility to safeguard the democratic rights of the people of Sri Lanka. 

The chairman of the Election Commission has reiterated in the announcement that according to the Supreme Court’s order and in accordance with the legal guidelines for holding elections, the Commission plans to set a date immediately for the local government elections after the parliamentary elections conclude. 

Meanwhile, the Election Commission also informs that the election of the Elpitiya Pradeshiya Sabha will be held on October 26 as previously decided during the parliamentary elections.
