JVP leader Somawansa Amarasinghe accused the government of joining with the international community in an attempt to destroy the free education system within universities. The government has separated only a small amount of money for university education, he affirmed.

Many problems have arisen within universities due to this and the government is giving a different definition to the students’ movement which is operating seeking solutions to these dilemmas, he stated.

Speaking today when representatives of the Inter University Students Federation (IUSF) met with Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) leaders at the party’s headquarters for discussions Mr. Amarasinghe pointed out that if free education is lost thugs and illiterates, like the majority in the government party will emerge.

“Ever since the current Minister was sworn in problems have aroused in every university” he accused. He also requested parents to come forward and question the government officials regarding this situation.

Acting Convenor of the IUSF, Sanjeewa Bandara who also participated in the discussions expressed that the present situation in universities is such that student don’t have the freedom to receive a proper education, the opportunity to hold cultural or artistic events or even love.

“Even to take part in a funeral we have to seek permission from 7 individuals and that too 7 days prior to the date” he further pointed out.

At the meeting Sanjeewa Bandara had requested that the JVP voice this situation and to also take the issue to the parliament.
