The low-pressure area southeast of Sri Lanka has intensified into a depression and is about 210km southeast of Batticaloa, the Department of Meteorology has announced.

It is very likely to move nearly north-northwestwards and intensify further into a Deep Depression during the next 12 hours, the Met. Department noted.

Due to the influence of this system, prevailing heavy showers and strong winds over the island are expected to continue further.

The general public has been requested to be attentive about future advisories issued by the Department of Meteorology in this regard.

Meanwhile, very heavy rainfall above 200 mm are predicted at some places in the North-central, North-western provinces and in the Trincomalee district while showers above 150mm are likely at some places in the North, Central, Sabaragamuwa, Uva and Western provinces and in the Galle, Matara and Batticaloa districts, the Met. Department stated.

Heavy falls above 100 mm are likely at some places in other areas of the island.

Furthermore, very strong winds of about 60-70kmph can be expected at times over most parts of the island.

The general public has been kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by heavy showers and strong winds.
