The largest quantity of drugs seized by law enforcement officials in recent history was recorded in 2025, Police Media Spokesperson Assistant Superintendent of Police F. U. Wootler stated.

The Police Spokesman made this revelation while addressing a special media briefing at the Government Information Department today (22) to highlight the progress of the “Nation United - National Drive Programme Update.”

ASP Wootler further stated that in 2024, a total of 10,871 kilograms of drugs—including heroin, cannabis, ice, hashish, and cocaine—were seized by police.

In 2025, police have seized 23,692 kilograms and 307 grams, representing a more than twofold increase compared to the previous year.

Meanwhile, the amount of cannabis seized rose from 8,359 kilograms in 2024 to 17,189 kilograms in 2025.

Furthermore, during 2024 and 2025, authorities succeeded in bringing back to Sri Lanka 21 drug traffickers who had been hiding overseas, the Police Spokesman said.

He further stated that Red Notices have been issued against 96 drug traffickers currently evading arrest abroad, and that steps are being taken to extradite them to Sri Lanka at the earliest possible time, the Police spokesman said.

Additionally, during 2024 and 2025, preliminary legal measures have been initiated to confiscate 354 gold sovereigns into state custody, while 77 vehicles purchased using illicit funds have been seized by police.

Moreover, 30 houses have been taken into police custody, 1,197 perches of land have been frozen and assets worth Rs. 353.9 million have been restrained.

Furthermore, 65 special investigations have been initiated in connection with these operations, ASP Wootler added.
