Authorities warn of possible water cuts as Kalatuwawa and Labugama supplies decline

The Kalatuwawa Water Treatment Plant, which is one of the main facilities supplying clean drinking water to the Colombo city and its surrounding areas, has only about 20 days’ worth of water remaining, the Chairman of the National Water Supply and Drainage Board, Engineer Chandana Bandara stated today (02).

Speaking at a media briefing held today, the Water Board Chairman further pointed out that water consumption is increasing due to the prevailing dry weather conditions.

He also said that due to the prevailing severe dry weather conditions in the country and the rising water consumption, it may become necessary to impose certain limitations on the production of drinking water in the near future.

Meanwhile, the National Water Supply and Drainage Board stated that the Labugama Water Treatment Plant has only about 50 days’ worth of water remaining.

Moreover, a 24-hour water cut will be imposed to Padukka, Homagama, and Pelanwatta due to the limited availability of water, the National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB) announced.

The General Manager (Western Central) of the Water Board, Disna Pannila attributed the water cut to the limited water production in Labugama- Kalatuwawa reservoir.
