The Association of Medical Specialists (AMS) stated that they will not support the strike action launched this morning (April 4) by the Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA).

AMS Secretary, Specialist Dr. R. Gnanasekaram, said that specialist doctors will continue their duties as usual, ensuring uninterrupted specialized medical services in hospitals.

He added that post-graduate trainee specialist doctors will also refrain from joining the strike.

Gnanasekaram noted that the AMS comprises around 2,300 doctors, all of whom are continuing their duties as usual, emphasizing that it is the association’s policy not to engage in strike action.

He further stated that while specialist doctors also face various issues, it is not their policy to engage in strikes that could put patients’ lives at risk.

He said that discussions are underway with the government on these issues and that some of the issues have not yet been resolved.

Meanwhile, the GMOA has commenced an island-wide strike in hospitals, alleging irregularities in post-internship appointments and service transfer lists of doctors due to political interference.

The strike began at 8 a.m., with no official announcement yet on the conclusion of the strike.

The GMOA had also staged one-day token strikes on Tuesday (March 31) and Thursday (April 2).

However, patients seeking treatment at hospitals across the island are experiencing significant inconvenience due to this strike, Ada Derana reporter said.
