Jailor and warden arrested over inmate death at Magazine Prison

A jailor and a warden have been arrested following the death of a 37-year-old inmate at the Magazine Prison last evening (27), police said.

A special investigation has been launched by the Prisons Department into the incident. Prisons Media Spokesman A.C. Gajanayake stated that the inquiry is being conducted under the supervision of an Assistant Superintendent of Prisons.

Two inmates and a prison officer were admitted to hospital with injuries following an incident reported at Magazine Prison yesterday (27) morning.

It has been reported that one of the injured inmates subsequently died.

The deceased is a 38-year-old remand prisoner who had been in custody in connection with drug-related charges, the Prisons Department confirmed.

Reports indicate that two inmates attempted to escape from their cells, and a prison officer intervened to prevent the escape. The incident occurred during this intervention, resulting in injuries to those involved.

A complaint has also been lodged with the Borella Police regarding the incident.

Accordingly, Borella Police have initiated a separate special investigation into the matter, the Police Media Spokesman stated.
