The Departments of Posts has been facing a shortage of stamps for around three months while suffering millions of rupees in losses due to the shortage, the Lanka Postal Services Union stated.
Stamps to the value of 50 cents, Rupee, Rs.2, Rs.10, Rs.20, Rs.50 and Rs. 100 have been in short supply over the last few months, the Union President Jayantha Wijesinghe said.
He warned that the postal department was heading towards certain disaster through these inefficiencies.
Meanwhile, the Secretary of the Ministry of Postal Services, Hemasiri Fernando told Ada Derana that while authorities had received reports about the shortage, steps have already been taken to control the situation in the next two weeks.
He revealed that while the Government Printer was informed of the requirement of stamps as soon as the shortage was reported, the process will take a few weeks due to the heavy workload of the printers at this time.
However, the Stamp Bureau had informed the Ministry that the printing had begun yesterday (November 24) and that the stamp requirement will be met in the next couple of weeks.
