The Ministry of Health has temporarily suspended the use of the drug cyclosporine, manufactured by an Indian company, at government and private hospitals due to suspicion over its quality.
Used in organ transplantation to prevent rejection, cyclosporine is widely used by kidney patients.
The Ministry however stated that no problems would arise regarding the distribution of the drug as sufficient stocks of the drug, manufactured by a different pharmaceutical company, have been imported and are stored.
The National Drug Quality Assurance Laboratory has been instructed to conduct immediate tests on the suspected stock of drugs and if found inferior importing of drugs from the company in question will be suspendered, the Ministry of Health affirmed.
